spring sheltering in big sur

The Bixby Bridge

I honestly don’t know where the time has gone. The first month of the pandemic, I was numb and unmotivated. But something kicked in during the month of April (yes, I am a month behind!). After the parks and trails in Big Sur (along with most of California) were closed, I turned my attention to home. Heaven knows that with 3 acres of untamed property, there was plenty to do. I’m still knee deep in poison oak and mud (I will save the unsavory details for a future post) but have been taking photos along the way.

Photography has become a creative outlet for me and I enjoy sharing it here and on my Instagram account. These are a few of my favorite photos from the month of April. Many are taken from our road and a few just off Highway 1. Being here has allowed me to revel in the changes happening every day to the landscape. April is peak wildflower time with Pride of Madeira, lupines, and the vibrant orange California poppies stealing the show. Enjoy this photographic calendar of April in Big Sur!

While we still have some rainy days in April, it is also the month with some of the clearest skies and azure colored water.
I try and take sunset walks down our road as often as possible. The fact that the sun sets so much later does make it more difficult as, more often than not, I’m in my jammies!

Pride of Madeira is at it’s peak in April and is quite a sight to see.
I love this time of year when we still have the rains and everything is still so green!
Deetjens may be closed but it is so beautiful this time of year. I stopped by to say hello to some friends who are rebuilding a few of the cabins that were damaged in a slide.

I’m grateful for the local businesses like Coast which provide some takeout food. Sweet Andrea always has a smile on her face!

Towards the end of April we had a few days of summer like weather. The outdoor shower was the place to be! Photo: Kelsey Burns

Thank for sharing your gorgeous photos; growing up on the peninsula (P.G.) Mar/April were my favorite months because of the Lupine & Poppies!
Big Sur was/is one of my favorite places and I miss it greatly. Your photos help ease my homesickness. After this SIP, and I can visit my family, again, Big Sur will be first on my list to see.
    Peace.

    Hi Deborah,
Those are my favorite months too. We are in a heat wave right now which will unfortunately bring a quicker end to the wildflower season but it’s been beautiful.
I hope you make it back to Big Sur soon. I’m glad you enjoyed the photos…
