Little Sur House

When we bought our Big Sur home, it came with permits for two studios. We have been working on one of them. When it is completely finished, I will do a blog on the before and after as we await more permits.

The view from the “studio”

Last month, I ordered a sofa from RH. (As I’ve mentioned before, RH is one of the only companies that will deliver here!) According to the RH site, it wouldn’t fit through the doorway of the studio. My dad, who was a contractor, took the measurements and even made a cardboard template. He assured me it would fit, so I bit the bullet and placed the order. Last weekend was delivery day. I can’t tell you how many times I worried about what an expensive mistake this would be if it didn’t fit…or what on earth I would do if they had to leave it in the driveway!

Last Saturday arrived and I was a nervous Nellie. We had a cocktail/wedding party to attend that evening an hour and a half away. The sofa was supposed to be delivered between 12:00 and 2:00 PM. RH delivery called around 1:30 and said they were about 40 minutes out. By 3:00, I was getting worried they were lost. Most of Big Sur lacks cell service so we were at a loss as to what to do. Around 3:30, our neighbor shouted down to us that the truck had arrived at his house! He jumped on his ATV and led them to our driveway which they had to back down…That was scary!!

The sofa arrived at last! But they still had to get it down the little path to the studio…

By now I was wanting a nice big glass of wine as I watched them maneuver the sofa down the path. When they got to the door, they didn’t think it would fit. Honestly, my dad thought the only way it would fit was to turn it on end and ease it through the sliding door. They took one look at the thin plank they would have to walk and said, “No way!” I can’t say I blamed them.

This is my neighbor listening to my ridiculous notion of trying to get the sofa through the 8′ tall sliding door which was more narrow than the front door!

My husband and neighbor took the front door off. This was our last hope. A couple of shoves later and it was in! I was overwhelmed with relief. After thanking the RH delivery guys profusely, my daughter’s boyfriend and I made some minor adjustments…

The rug and sofa weren’t quite in the right spot.

That night before heading to the party, we celebrated with wine, cheese and pizza. Obviously, we don’t usually dress this way in Big Sur!

The pillows are borrowed from the main house and are by INDIEbungalow. The rustic bench/coffee table is from Porch. The ceramic pot is from Farmhouse Pottery and the lantern is from World Market. The vintage oil paintings are from Mate Gallery.

There is still much to do but for now we are enjoying our Little Sur House and its incredible views!

What an adventure Elizabeth. So glad everything worked out in the end. The sofa looks amazing in the studio, and that view is to die for. So glad the rain held off for the delivery too. That would have added even more stress to the situation.

It was definitely an adventure! And what a scare I had when the delivery guys said they didn’t think it would fit! Yikes!
