showering en plein air

The Big Sur House

Let me start out by making clear that I am not an exhibitionist. As a small child, I have fond memories of coming back from the beach sandy and a bit sunburned but eagerly looking forward to the outdoor shower (or “plein air”, as I like to call it). It was the only one in the rented bungalow! Never mind that there were often a dozen of us in need of washing off the sand and suntan lotion…it was worth the wait!

Fast forward many years and my love of showering outdoors has remained. We installed one in our first Connecticut home, but it was cramped in a corner and not optimum. Our second Connecticut home, with it’s proximity to the beach, was the perfect place for a large outdoor shower. With only one full bath, it gets plenty of use all summer long!

We built a shower off the back of the house just off the patio.

An ample size and in full sun, it’s the perfect spot to rinse off after a day at the beach or a run.

When we renovated our back yard at The Little Glass House in Santa Barbara, my husband wanted a hot tub and I wanted an outdoor shower. It was the perfect combination. Since we have a private back yard, the decision was made to have this truly plein air with no walls or surround. An ipe wood deck and covered post makes it feel simple, modern, and organic.

There are hot and cold valves behind the post to adjust the water temperature. That way only one knob was needed in the front. There is also a small shelf built into the back to hold shampoo and soap. I wanted a clean aesthetic for this shower!

At our Big Sur home, there are two full baths but only one shower. Nothing compares to showering outside in Big Sur! And this time, it’s a shower with a view!

The shower is surrounded by wildflowers and lavender. A small stump holds shampoo, and a redwood fence/wall acts as a screen and a place to hang clothing or towel. Eventually, I’m hoping to have it covered with climbing jasmine.

A walk down a citrus tree and lavender path on stones planted with creeping thyme between them, is a joy for the senses. And then there is the view…

The view from inside the shower makes it a memorable experience!

It doesn’t get much better than that!

Oh Elizabeth, how lucky you are with those showers. I am married to an American ( I am Dutch) and whenever we visit the States, we also always visit his aunt and uncle at the Cape and they have an outdoor shower! Showering in there is always one of the highlights of my vacation, because you are so close to nature and it just feels wonderful. Enjoy yours!

Oh how wonderful Elizabeth, love the idea of an outdoor shower, never tried it myself and the weather here (and lack of beach!) isn’t very conducive to it. Such amazing views and I love the clean lines.

Thank you! And yes, it is an amazing feeling, but I would think without the sunshine, it wouldn’t be quite as nice πŸ™‚
