Anatomy of a Bedroom

January 8, 2016

The bedroom is a place you spend at least one third of your life, so it makes sense that it should be a comfortable, serene space. There are 3 things that are a must for me:  a great mattress, an absence of clutter, and it must be aesthetically pleasing.

As with every room I decorate, my bedroom is a mix of high and low, old and new. Just because I live in a midcentury style home, it doesn’t mean my furnishings have to match. I don’t want to live in a midcentury modern museum! I shop at the big home stores (RH, Crate and Barrel, CB2, West Elm), online, local shops, tag sales, antique storesand yes, even Target. Because a bedroom is a personal space, I like to display things that have special meaning to me.

Let’s break it down. The bed is from Crate and Barrel. I had always wanted an upholstered bed, but my favorite part is NO dust ruffle!  I’ve always had beds with dust ruffles to cover up the ugly metal frame. Have you ever tried cleaning those things? Ugh! I never want to own another one! (You can tell I have strong feelings about dust ruffles). The mattress is from Costco, which I bought online. I read through all the reviews and with their generous return policy, I took a chance and ordered one. I nailed it on the first try. I love my mattress!

I wanted a little sparkle and while I love the look of mirrored end tables, I’m not a fan of the price. I found these little cuties at Target for a song. I swapped out the generic knobs for some pretty lucite ones. They fit the bill of being small and having a drawer for my stuff.

I bought the little bench (the one at the foot of the bed) online at Great Stuff by Paul. It is a veritable treasure trove of STUFF. Never underestimate the importance of a bench at the foot of the bed.

My other bench was a Wisteria find which I use to store some of my many decorating books. It also gives me the opportunity to have a place to style when the mood strikes me.

The black and white dresser was my big splurge. I waited until it went on sale at Wisteria but it was still more than I would normally spend. I love the graphic look of it and it just makes me happy!  An old decorator friend of mine once told me that every room could use a touch of black. I so agree!

After splurging on the dresser, it didn’t leave much in the budget for a rug, so I had to be thrifty on that one. It doesn’t mean it’s my forever rug but for now it works just fine. I found it at Cost Plus World Market and it was such a good deal!

As for the personal aspect of the room, art and photos fill the bill. I have a beautiful black and white photograph taken of our daughter when she was five. I love seeing her little face when I wake up in the morning. On my styling bench I have a watercolor that  I painted of our old house in Connecticut.

And above the bed (even though it is too tiny for most people to see) is a small etching of sheep in repose that I bought at an antique show. It makes me think of counting sheep to fall asleep!  A sense of humor is always welcome.

One of my newest favorite things, is a gray mud cloth pillow that was a Christmas gift from my dear friends over at Porch. They know all about my pillow addiction!

And last but not least, I  like to incorporate plants or flowers in a room to give it life and a jolt of color.  I almost always have leaves that I cut from the yard or  flowers from the local farmers markets.

And there you have it….the anatomy of my bedroom. It’s my comfortable, pretty, personal sanctuary.

I found the pillow on Chairish and the throw was a gift from a friend that she bought at Nantucket Looms.
